Amish White Bread

Amish White Bread

Soft, tender, and lightly sweet, Amish White Bread is a classic homemade loaf that has earned a place in countless family kitchens. Its delicate texture and rich flavor make it ideal for everything from sandwiches and French toast to warm slices served with butter. Simple ingredients and straightforward steps make this recipe a favorite for both new and experienced bakers.

One of the best things about this bread is its reliability. With a handful of pantry staples, you can create two beautiful loaves with a soft crumb and golden crust that rival those from a bakery.

Ingredients

IngredientAmount
Warm water (110°F / 45°C)2 cups
Granulated sugar⅔ cup
Active dry yeast1½ tablespoons
Salt1½ teaspoons
Vegetable oil¼ cup
Bread flour6 cups

Directions

1. Proof the Yeast

In a large bowl, stir the sugar into the warm water until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and allow it to rest for 5 to 10 minutes, or until foamy and active.

2. Prepare the Dough

Add the salt and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate the bread flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough comes together.

3. Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth, elastic, and slightly springy.

4. First Rise

Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl and turn it once to coat the surface. Cover with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm location for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

5. Form the Loaves

Gently press down the risen dough and knead briefly. Divide it into two equal portions and shape each into a loaf. Place the dough into two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.

6. Second Rise

Cover the pans and allow the dough to rise for about 30 minutes, or until the tops extend slightly above the rims of the pans.

7. Bake

Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for approximately 30 minutes. The loaves should be golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

8. Cool

Allow the bread to cool in the pans for several minutes before removing it. Transfer the loaves to a wire rack and let them cool completely before slicing.

Serving Suggestions

  • Toast and serve with butter or jam
  • Use for sandwiches and grilled cheese
  • Make French toast or bread pudding
  • Enjoy warm with soups and stews
