The second these hit the kitchen table, they’re gone before I can even reach for one

Savory Herb & Cheddar Scones

These flaky, soft scones are loaded with sharp cheddar and fresh herbs, making them an excellent companion to soups or a delicious snack on their own.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh herbs (such as chives, parsley, or thyme)
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Oven
Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.

Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.

Step 3: Cut in the Butter
Add the cold butter to the bowl. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, blend until the mixture looks like rough crumbs.

Step 4: Add Cheese and Herbs
Mix in the shredded cheddar and chopped herbs until evenly distributed.

Step 5: Mix in the Milk
Create a small well in the center and pour in the milk. Stir gently just until the dough comes together, being careful not to overwork it.

Step 6: Form the Scones
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead briefly until smooth, then pat into a circle about 1 inch thick. Slice into 8 equal wedges.

Step 7: Bake
Arrange the wedges on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart. Brush the tops with beaten egg. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden and fully baked through.

Step 8: Cool and Serve
Allow the scones to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving warm.
