Skillet Hamburger Steaks with Easy One-Pour Gravy

This comforting skillet meal is perfect for busy evenings—simple to prepare, filling, and guaranteed to satisfy. Flavorful hamburger steaks cook directly in a rich gravy made with beef broth, condensed mushroom soup, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder. Everything simmers together in one pan until the patties become tender and the sauce turns thick and savory, reminiscent of a classic diner-style meal with a convenient weeknight shortcut.

Serve these hamburger steaks over creamy mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or fluffy steamed rice so the delicious gravy can soak in. Pair with an easy vegetable like green beans, corn, or a fresh salad, and add warm dinner rolls or toasted bread to enjoy every bit of the sauce.

Ingredients

IngredientAmountNotes
Ground beef1 ½ lbs (80–85% lean)For patties
Kosher salt1 tspSeasoning
Black pepper½ tspSeasoning
Garlic powder½ tspOptional
Condensed cream of mushroom soup1 (10.5 oz) canBase for gravy
Beef broth1 cupLow-sodium preferred
Ketchup3 tbspAdds mild sweetness
Worcestershire sauce1 tbspDeepens flavor
Onion powder1 tspSeasoning
Vegetable or canola oil1 tbspFor cooking
Fresh parsley1 tbsp, choppedOptional garnish

Directions

1. Season the Meat
Place the ground beef in a large bowl and gently mix in the salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using. Shape the mixture into four thick patties, pressing a small indentation in the center of each one.

2. Mix the Gravy
In a medium bowl whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder until smooth and well blended.

3. Brown the Patties
Warm the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger patties and cook for about 2–3 minutes on the first side until lightly browned.

4. Pour in the Gravy
Carefully pour the prepared gravy mixture over the patties and allow it to come to a gentle simmer.

5. Let Everything Cook Together
Cover the skillet and cook for about 15–20 minutes, turning the patties once halfway through. Spoon some of the gravy over the patties as they simmer.

6. Check for Doneness
The patties should reach an internal temperature of 160°F. The gravy should be thick enough to coat a spoon. If it becomes too thick, add a little extra broth; if it’s too thin, let it simmer uncovered for a few minutes.

7. Serve
Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired, and serve the hamburger steaks hot with plenty of gravy over your favorite side dish.
