This Could Explain Why You Wake Up Between 3 and 5 a.m.

Sleeping through the night without interruption feels like a rare treat, yet getting consistent, restful sleep is crucial for waking up refreshed and functioning at your best.

Many people assume that going to bed at the “right” time guarantees a full night’s rest. However, waking up between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM is surprisingly common, and falling back asleep can be difficult. This phenomenon isn’t just random—it carries deeper implications.

The Hour of the Wolf

The period between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM is often called the “hour of the wolf,” a concept popularized by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman in his psychological horror film of the same name.

Bergman described it as:
“The hour between night and dawn … when sleep is deepest, nightmares are most vivid. It is the time when the sleepless are haunted by their worst fears, when ghosts and demons hold the greatest power. The hour of the wolf is also when most babies are born.”

According to Professor Birgitta Steene, the term comes from Swedish folklore, where this time frame is believed to see an unusually high number of births and deaths.

Physiologically, this is also the period when the body reaches its deepest state of rest, making it more sensitive to disturbances.

A Time of Rest—or Unease

In folk traditions, this period is sometimes referred to as the witching hour or devil’s hour, associated with heightened supernatural activity. Witches, spirits, and demons were thought to be most active at this time.

For those who sleep deeply, the hour of the wolf simply marks the body’s deepest restorative sleep. But for those who wake up during these hours, it often coincides with heightened anxiety or restlessness.

The body’s circadian rhythm follows the natural cycle of day and night, slowing physiological functions like body temperature, blood pressure, and metabolism during the night. By around 4:00 AM, these processes are at their lowest, signaling the body’s most restorative phase. For anxious sleepers, this low point can amplify feelings of unease, causing them to wake.

Whether viewed through the lens of folklore, biology, or something more mysterious, waking up between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM carries a significance that goes beyond mere coincidence.
