Slow Cooker 3-Ingredient Cola Ham

This slow cooker 3-ingredient cola ham is exactly the type of recipe my Uncle Joe appreciates—minimal effort, rich flavor, and a wonderful aroma that fills the house like a classic Sunday dinner. He’s been making a version of it for years, and the first time I tried it, I was convinced he had spent hours carefully glazing and tending it.

The secret lies in the simple mix of cola and brown sugar. As the ham cooks slowly, the two combine to create a thick, glossy glaze that coats the meat in a sweet, sticky layer. The result tastes far more complex than the short ingredient list suggests. The slow cooking process also makes the ham incredibly tender—so soft it almost pulls apart with a fork. It’s ideal for busy days when you want a main dish that feels special but requires very little work.

Serve it with creamy mashed potatoes, scalloped potatoes, or rice to soak up the flavorful juices. To balance the richness, add a green vegetable such as roasted green beans, steamed broccoli, or a crisp salad. Leftover ham is perfect for sandwiches, omelets, fried rice, or quesadillas. Be sure to save some of the cooking liquid to drizzle over the meat or keep leftovers moist the next day.

Instructions

1. Prepare the ham
Pat the ham dry and place it in the slow cooker with the cut side facing downward. Trim slightly if needed so it fits comfortably.

2. Add the sugar
Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top and sides of the ham, gently pressing it so it adheres to the surface.

3. Pour in the cola
Carefully pour the cola into the bottom of the slow cooker, trying not to rinse the sugar off the ham. The liquid should come about 1–2 inches up the sides.

4. Cook the ham
Cover and cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the ham is fully heated and very tender.

5. Rest the meat
Transfer the ham to a cutting board and loosely cover it with foil. Let it rest for about 10 minutes. Skim any excess fat from the cooking liquid if necessary.

6. Optional glaze step
Spoon some of the dark, sweet cooking juices over the ham while it rests. You can also slice or shred the meat and return it to the slow cooker to soak up more flavor.

7. Serve
Slice or shred the ham and drizzle some of the cooking juices over each serving. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days, keeping some of the liquid with the meat to maintain moisture.
