Hamburger Mushroom Bake

Some recipes come together out of pure necessity—and this one proves it. It started on a busy weeknight with just ground beef, mushrooms, cheese, and a handful of pantry staples. Nothing fancy, but once baked together, it turned into pure comfort on a plate.

Now it’s a reliable favorite whenever you want something filling, homemade, and easy to prepare. With savory beef, tender mushrooms, and a rich, cheesy topping, this bake works just as well for weeknight dinners as it does for small gatherings or special occasions.

If you enjoy a cheesy mushroom dish or want a satisfying, protein-packed meal, this recipe is one you’ll keep coming back to.

Ingredients

Meat & Vegetables

IngredientAmount
Ground beef1 lb (450 g)
Fresh mushrooms, sliced8 oz (225 g)
Small onion, finely diced1
Garlic cloves, minced2

Creamy Base

IngredientAmount
Sour cream1 cup (240 ml)
Heavy cream1/2 cup (120 ml)
Mozzarella cheese, shredded1 cup (100 g)
Cheddar cheese, shredded1/2 cup (50 g)
Olive oil or butter1 tbsp

Seasonings

IngredientAmount
Salt1 tsp
Black pepper1/2 tsp
Paprika1/2 tsp
Dried thyme (optional)1/2 tsp
Chili flakes (optional)1/4 tsp

Instructions

Preheat the Oven
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.

Cook the Beef
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the ground beef for 5–7 minutes until browned, draining excess fat if needed. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.

Sauté the Vegetables
Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes. Stir in the mushrooms and cook until softened and their moisture has evaporated, about 5–7 minutes. Add thyme and chili flakes if using.

Prepare the Creamy Mixture
In a bowl, whisk together the sour cream and heavy cream until smooth. Mix in half of the mozzarella cheese.

Assemble the Bake
Spread the cooked beef evenly in the baking dish. Add the mushroom mixture on top. Pour the creamy mixture over everything, then sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella and cheddar.

Bake
Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until hot, bubbly, and lightly golden on top.

Rest & Serve
Let the dish rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
