Ingredients
For the Filling
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ cup diced onion
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ⅓ cup ketchup
- 3 tbsp mustard
- 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 2 dill pickle spears, chopped
- 8 slices American cheese
For the Bread
- 1 (11-oz) tube refrigerated French bread dough
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
For Serving
- Thousand Island dressing
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Filling
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onion until the meat is browned and the onion is tender, about 8–10 minutes. Break the beef into crumbles as it cooks. Season with salt and pepper.
Drain any excess grease and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Stir in the ketchup, mustard, and crumbled bacon until evenly combined.
Step 2: Assemble the Bread
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
On a lightly floured surface, roll the French bread dough into a rectangle approximately 12×8 inches.
Spread the beef mixture evenly over the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border around the edges. Scatter the chopped pickles over the top, then arrange the cheese slices evenly across the filling.
Starting from one long side, roll the dough into a tight log. Pinch the seams and ends closed, then place the loaf seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
Step 3: Bake
Brush the top of the loaf with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the bread is fully cooked.
Step 4: Serve
Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes before slicing.
Serve warm with Thousand Island dressing on the side for dipping.
A Fun Twist on Comfort Food
With layers of beef, bacon, cheese, and pickles wrapped in a crisp, golden crust, Garbage Bread delivers all the flavors of a classic diner-style burger in a convenient, sliceable loaf that’s perfect for sharing.
