All-purpose flour2 tablespoons
Beef broth2 cups
Worcestershire sauce1 teaspoon
Dried thyme½ teaspoon
Salt and pepperTo taste

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the oven
Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) so it’s ready when you begin baking.

Step 2: Make the hamburger steaks
In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Combine gently until everything is evenly distributed. Shape the mixture into 4–5 oval patties.

Step 3: Brown the patties
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear each patty for 2–3 minutes per side, just until they develop a nice brown crust. Move the browned patties into a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 4: Prepare the gravy
Using the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux. Slowly whisk in the beef broth until the mixture is smooth. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and season with salt and black pepper. Let the gravy simmer for 3–4 minutes, or until it thickens.

Step 5: Bake
Pour the gravy evenly over the patties in the baking dish. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are fully cooked and tender.

Step 6: Serve
Spoon plenty of gravy over each portion and enjoy this comforting Amish-style dish while it’s hot.
