When you’re seated at a restaurant, it’s common for the server to ask whether you’d like regular water, sparkling, or water with a slice of lemon. While lemon water often feels like the “healthier” or fancier choice, it may not be the safest option when you’re eating out. Recent reports suggest that those bright lemon wedges can carry more than just a refreshing twist.
Several investigations have uncovered concerning details about the cleanliness of restaurant lemon slices. According to an analysis by ABC News on the ten most contaminated items found in restaurants, lemon wedges made the list. Astonishingly, nearly half of the lemons they tested contained bacteria associated with human fecal matter. This naturally raises an unsettling question: how does contamination occur in the first place?
The report noted that many restaurant workers handle lemons directly with bare hands instead of using gloves or utensils. When proper handwashing practices are skipped—especially after using the restroom—harmful germs can be transferred onto the lemons long before they end up floating in your drink.
A study featured in the Journal of Environmental Health examined 76 lemon samples taken from 21 different restaurants. The findings were alarming: almost 70% of those samples contained various forms of bacteria, including strains like E. coli, which can cause significant illness.
Restaurant surfaces and ingredients can harbor more bacteria than we’d like to imagine, so taking simple precautions is worthwhile. Washing your hands before eating is always a smart habit. And when you’re ordering a beverage, it may be safer to skip the lemon altogether. Choosing plain water—especially in restaurant settings—might be the healthier, more hygienic option.
