People Apparently Still Don’t Know What Paprika Is Made From

Paprika, and its smokier counterpart smoked paprika, is a staple in countless global dishes—appearing in everything from classic paella to the occasional paprika-laced tea. You might assume that a spice so widely used comes from an exotic or unique source, but many are surprised to learn just how ordinary its origins really are.

In an eye-opening post by Australian brand Nutraorganics, they pointed out a fact that left many stunned: paprika is made from common peppers that have simply been dried and ground. When this detail resurfaced on Twitter earlier in the year, it sparked amazement—and exposed how many people had never questioned what paprika was actually made from.

The explanation clarified that paprika is derived from sweet, mild varieties of peppers. These are descendants of the spicier peppers brought to Europe by Spanish explorers after their journeys to the Americas. Over generations, European farmers cultivated milder strains, developing the signature sweetness we associate with paprika today.

Though the peppers used in paprika share some flavor characteristics with bell peppers, they’re generally longer and slimmer. Some versions of paprika, especially the hotter ones, include chili peppers in the blend. Still, in countries like Hungary—where paprika holds cultural importance—the sweeter kind is the most commonly used.

So, despite what you might imagine, paprika doesn’t come from a rare spice plant or some mystery pod. It comes from the same familiar peppers you’ve likely cooked with before—only dried and finely ground into the bright, red-orange powder you keep in your spice rack.
