Orange Roll Casserole That Rises Overnight

Overnight Orange Roll Casserole

This Overnight Orange Roll Casserole turns a convenient breakfast shortcut into a rich, citrus-infused baked treat. When the pieces of orange roll dough soak overnight in a creamy egg custard, they develop a soft, fluffy center with lightly golden tops after baking. The addition of fresh orange zest and juice elevates the flavor, giving the casserole a bright, bakery-style taste that feels far more special than the simple ingredients suggest.

Ingredients

The Casserole

IngredientAmount
Refrigerated orange rolls2 cans
Butter, melted (for pan)¼ cup
Eggs4
Heavy cream⅓ cup
Light brown sugar⅓ cup
Orange (zest and juice)1
Vanilla extract1 teaspoon

Fresh Orange Icing

IngredientAmount
Powdered sugar2 cups
Butter, melted2 tablespoons
Orange juice¾ tablespoon
Orange zest1 tablespoon
Vanilla extract1 teaspoon

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dish and Dough
Pour the melted butter into a 9×13-inch baking dish, tilting the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Cut each orange roll into quarters and arrange the pieces across the dish.

Step 2: Prepare the Custard
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Stir in the zest and juice from the orange. Pour the mixture over the dough pieces, ensuring they are evenly soaked.

Step 3: Refrigerate Overnight
Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and place it in the refrigerator overnight. This resting time allows the rolls to absorb the custard fully. If needed, the casserole can be baked right away, though the texture will be slightly less rich.

Step 4: Bake
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Remove the foil and bake the casserole for 30–35 minutes, until the tops are puffed and lightly golden while the center remains soft and custard-like. Let the casserole cool for about 10 minutes.

Step 5: Add the Glaze and Serve
While the casserole rests, combine the icing ingredients in a bowl. Begin with about 3 tablespoons of orange juice, adding more if you prefer a thinner consistency. Drizzle the glaze over the warm casserole and serve right away.
