Growing up, our family didn’t have much. This was one of the meals my mama made often—simple, comforting, and full of heart. It taught me so much.

This warm, comforting dish combines soft, thinly sliced potatoes with flavorful shredded chicken, all coated in a rich, creamy sauce infused with garlic. A blend of cheddar and mozzarella melts beautifully, creating a gooey, irresistible finish.

Oven-Baked Creamy Potato & Chicken Gratin

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar and mozzarella blend)
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for greasing
  • ¼ cup fresh chives, chopped

Instructions:

Step 1 – Prepare the Oven and Dish
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter a rectangular baking dish to keep the gratin from sticking.

Step 2 – First Layer
Place half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer on the bottom of the dish. Spread half of the shredded chicken over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the cheese.

Step 3 – Second Layer
Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, chicken, and cheese.

Step 4 – Warm the Cream Mixture
In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream, milk, and minced garlic over medium heat just until warmed and aromatic. Do not allow the mixture to boil.

Step 5 – Add Cream and Season
Carefully pour the warm cream mixture over the layered ingredients. Season well with salt and black pepper.

Step 6 – Bake
Transfer the dish to the oven and bake for 45–50 minutes, until the potatoes are fork-tender and the top is bubbly and lightly browned.

Step 7 – Finish and Serve
Allow the gratin to rest for about 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped chives, then serve warm.
