This classic Amish-style meatloaf is the definition of comfort food. It’s easy to make, incredibly flavorful, and topped with a sweet and tangy glaze that caramelizes beautifully in the oven. With tender ground beef and finely chopped veggies, this hearty dish is a timeless favorite for family dinners.

🍽 Ingredients

For the Meatloaf:

IngredientQuantity
Ground beef2 pounds
Breadcrumbs1 cup
Finely chopped onion½ cup
Finely chopped green bell pepper½ cup
Large eggs, beaten2
Milk¾ cup
Worcestershire sauce2 tablespoons
Salt1 teaspoon
Black pepper½ teaspoon
Garlic powder½ teaspoon

For the Glaze:

IngredientQuantity
Ketchup½ cup
Brown sugar¼ cup
Yellow mustard1 tablespoon

🔪 Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan and set it aside.

Step 2: Mix the Meatloaf
In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, green bell pepper, eggs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Use your hands to mix just until everything is incorporated—avoid overmixing to keep the loaf tender.

Step 3: Form the Loaf
Transfer the mixture into the prepared loaf pan. Press it in evenly but don’t compact it too tightly.

Step 4: Prepare the Glaze
Whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard in a small bowl. Spread the glaze over the top of the meatloaf.

Step 5: Bake
Bake for about 1 hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing to lock in the juices.

✅ Tips for Best Results

  • Breadcrumb Options: Use either plain or seasoned breadcrumbs—or substitute with crushed saltines for a softer texture.
  • Milk Choices: Whole milk gives a richer flavor, but any milk or plant-based alternative will work fine.
  • Handle with Care: Overmixing can make the meatloaf dense. Mix just enough to bring the ingredients together.
  • Rest Before Slicing: Allowing the loaf to rest helps keep it moist and makes for cleaner slices.
