Unsalted butter (softened)½ cup
Granulated sugar1 cup
Large eggs2
Vanilla extract1 teaspoon
Buttermilk1 cup
Unsweetened cocoa powder½ cup

For the Crinkle Topping:

IngredientQuantity
Powdered sugar½ cup
Granulated sugar¼ cup

👩‍🍳 Directions

1. Make the Cake Batter:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease and flour a square or rectangular baking pan.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy and pale.
  • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each. Add the vanilla.
  • Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix gently—just until combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly into two bowls. Mix the cocoa powder into one half to create your chocolate batter.

2. Assemble the Cake:

  • Drop spoonfuls of the vanilla and chocolate batters alternately into the prepared pan.
  • Swirl the batters together using a knife or skewer to create a marbled pattern.

3. Add the Crinkle Topping:

  • In a small bowl, stir together the powdered sugar and granulated sugar.
  • Sprinkle the sugar mixture generously over the entire surface of the batter.

4. Bake:

  • Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for about 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
