Cheesy Spinach and Mushroom Strata

Few dishes deliver comfort quite like a hot, cheesy spinach and mushroom strata. Rooted in Italian-inspired flavors, this savory baked casserole layers cubes of day-old bread with a rich egg custard, sautéed vegetables, and generous amounts of melted cheese. It’s hearty, budget-friendly, and perfect for family dinners or laid-back weekend brunches.

One of the greatest advantages of a strata is its make-ahead convenience. You can assemble it in advance, making busy mornings feel effortless while still serving something homemade and satisfying. With its crisp, golden crust and tender, flavorful center, this dish is always a crowd favorite.

Serve it with a fresh green salad tossed in a bright vinaigrette for contrast, or round out brunch with bacon, sausage, and seasonal fruit. Add a cup of hot coffee or a glass of fresh orange juice to complete the meal.

🍴 Directions

Preheat the Oven

Sauté the Vegetables
Warm olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook mushrooms until browned and tender, about 5 minutes. Add spinach and cook just until wilted, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.

Assemble the Layers
Spread the cubed bread evenly in the prepared dish. Evenly distribute the mushroom and spinach mixture over the bread. Sprinkle shredded cheddar across the top.

Make the Custard
Whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in a bowl until fully blended. Pour the mixture evenly over the layered bread and vegetables.

Serve
Sprinkle with fresh parsley before slicing. Serve warm.
