3-Ingredient Crispy Pan-Fried Halloumi

Halloumi is a unique cheese famous for its signature “squeak” and high resistance to melting, making it perfect for pan-frying. This easy method creates a crisp, salty exterior while the center stays soft and warm.

3-Ingredient Pan-Fried Halloumi

Ingredients

IngredientAmount
Halloumi cheese, sliced ½-inch thick8 oz (225 g)
Olive oil or butter1 tablespoon
Dried oregano or fresh thyme (optional)½ teaspoon

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Cheese
Remove the halloumi from its packaging and slice it into ½-inch thick pieces. Use paper towels to dry each slice thoroughly. Removing excess moisture helps the cheese brown evenly and prevents splattering.

Step 2: Warm the Pan
Heat the olive oil or butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat until the pan is hot and the fat starts to shimmer.

Step 3: Fry the Halloumi
Arrange the slices in a single layer in the pan. Cook without moving them for 2–3 minutes so a golden crust can develop. Once the bottom is crisp, turn the slices over.

Step 4: Season (Optional)
If using herbs, sprinkle the oregano or thyme over the cheese immediately after flipping. This allows the herbs to gently toast in the pan. Cook the second side for another 2–3 minutes.

Step 5: Serve Immediately
Transfer the halloumi to a plate and serve right away while hot and tender. Enjoy on its own with a squeeze of lemon, or use it to enhance a Mediterranean-style salad with a savory, salty bite.
